“The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat.” – Mark 6:30-31
It’s Friday! That means the weekend is almost here! This verse is always a great reminder to find time on the weekend to rest. In Mark 6:30-31, Jesus teaches his disciples the importance of establishing a time for resting and work. After he sent his disciples out to preach the gospel and heal the sick, they returned ready to do more with renewed ambition and excitement. However, Jesus told his disciples “Let’s go off by ourselves to go to a quiet place and rest awhile.”
Why did Jesus say this?
There were several people who wanted to hear the truth and be healed. Jesus and his disciples would not have hardly any time to eat and rest if he wasn’t paying attention to his disciples. Jesus wanted his disciples to avoid becoming overburdened by the ministry. This lesson from Jesus is so important in ministry and even in our day-to-day life for serving him. We don’t want to get caught up in trying to do it all and neglect that personal time to spend with God and with people. Not being rested and trying to get everything done immediately wears us down both physically and spiritually. Yet, whenever we rest we can accomplish so much more. By being more alert and discerning allows you to determine more easily what God wants us to do to serve others and him in our lives. This weekend, we encourage you to rest and enjoy the time with your spouse, families, friends and others close to you.
