Our initial impressions were great for this machine! It was packed very, very well and it unboxes easily in 2-3 minutes. We used a mason jar to do the initial cleaning, but you can use any cup just make sure that it’s large enough to contain a full 12oz of water. We would suggest following their directions and doing the cold first in case there’s any overflow. After unpacking the machine, the quick start instructions contain the Registration Code (good for $10 at the Dolce-Gusto online store). The instructions are very clear and will get you up and be brewing in minutes.
Something we have to note is the build and quality of this machine. Steph and I have a lot of kitchen appliances, and most of them we expect to replace them in 2 or 3 years. This machine however just feels like it’s built tougher and will last longer than most. The components that you will interact with the most (locking handle, capsule holder & scroll wheel) are all made of metal. Heat and plastic generally don’t mix too well, and broken components make for a bad day. That’s why these metal components are a welcome addition to the machine.
We were provided with 3 boxes of pods to get us going using the unit. They were the Cafe Au Lait, Dark Roast, and Medium roast pods. Steph and I have tried all 3, and they all brewed quickly and deliciously for us. My personal favorite of them was the Medium roast, as it wasn’t too bitter or acidic. One thing to note about the NESCAFE Dolce Gusto system is that you need to closely follow the brewing instructions. Some of the coffee requires multiple pods, and the newer pods are being designed for 12oz cups. All in all, it was a very straight-forward and simple system to quickly brew a great cup of coffee. Check out our brewing video to see how quickly your drink will be ready!
At about $10 a box, and with 16 pods in a box, the black coffees come in at just over $.60 a cup, while the specialty drinks requiring more than 1 pod come in at just over $1.20 a cup. That’s honestly a bargain compared to purchasing coffee at any coffee shop. Additionally, unless you have family beating you to the machine in the morning there is no line to wait in as well! When you’re done brewing your cup of goodness, just toss your pod in the provided pod disposal bin. Inside the disposal bin, the pod can drip until it’s empty and you can throw it away without any aggravating leaks in your trash can.
Final Thoughts: The three words we would use to describe this machine are SPEED, SIMPLICITY & CONVENIENCE. For us, that adds up to some serious value. What we have here is a machine that can serve up a caffeinated beverage quickly, without a mess and with minimal effort. Let’s face it, we don’t have the luxury of time some mornings to make coffee how we usually do. That is where this machine SHINES! Literally, almost a minute after you grab the pod you want, you will have a cup of delicious hot coffee/tea/espresso ready to drink! If you’re looking for a machine that will serve the drink you want quickly at a reasonable price, you don’t need to look much further. The only real concern we have with this machine is the current lack of local availability of the pods. The grocery stores and retailers close to where we live do not stock these pods. It is however simple to order them online. Just be aware of this, and check your favorite local stores to factor that into your decision.
