It’s almost that time of year when students will be finishing up their last day of school and getting ready for Summer Vacation. Just as the students are ready to hear that last bell before their break, so are the teachers. Soon, teachers will be cleaning and organizing their classrooms, preparing their new lesson plans, filling out new name tags, putting new labels on their desks and organizers, preparing for next years class and hopefully taking a much needed vacation!
May 1st is the first day of Teacher Appreciation week! Brewing Wisdom would like to thank teachers everywhere for their hard work, long hours and true dedication to teaching the children across the nation. To celebrate this special time of the year, Jason and I had the privilege to thank a teacher who we believe defines the word “teacher” by gifting them with a desk make-over inspired by the DaySpring Karen Kingsbury Collection.
The image above shows the kit we put together and in this article we want to go through these items so you too can gather some ideas to gift a teacher you know in your or your child’s life. (Please feel free to share this post for anyone looking for ideas to celebrate Teacher Appreciation!)
We believe that all teachers are important and deserved to be lifted on this week, however there is one type of teacher that really stood out to us. This type of teacher holds a very challenging position in today’s society and is often the one who gets up in the morning not knowing if anyone will show up or if what they say will make a difference. This teacher is called to a high standard and is held especially accountable for “walking the walk” after “talking the talk”. This year, we wanted to honor a Sunday School teacher who week-by-week is shaping the lives of the children she teaches… she is my sister.
For the past seven years, Jason and I have witnessed my sister as a faithful and wonderful Sunday school teacher. And in the those seven years not all Sunday mornings started out bright and happy. There were some mornings when putting on a smile to teach her children’s Sunday school class was hard to do. Either her heart was heavy with burdens from that current week from work, a break-up, or just not feeling well; still, she wiped away the tears and remained faithful to her calling. For those mornings, we included the Karen Kingsbury, A Better Place Jumbo Mug that reads “The world would be a different place because of her, a better place” as a reminder for who she is and her purpose for when those days come.
Let’s not forget about all those lesson plans! The next two items we included in the kit were the Karen Kingsbury – Hold the Moment – File Folders and the Karen Kingsbury – A Better Place – Letter Sorter each one displays a wonderful reminder with scripture that is very encouraging to all teachers. Many times when visiting my sister I recall hearing her mention about printing out her lesson plans, in fact when we gave her this gift she went and grabbed her lesson plans and placed them in the folders for the following Sunday! These folders and the organizer will be filled with many lessons that are more than just printed words on paper, these lesson plans are filled with wisdom and knowledge from a teacher who took her own time to prepare for her class. My sister said that her most memorable moment was from one of her lesson plans on Daniel and the Lions Den.
The next item we included in the kit was this inspirational pencil cup holder. It includes four pockets for pens, pencils, highlighters and markers. Highlighting, taking notes, writing down those with allergies, writing down new names and more can be done without searching everywhere for a pen. This pencil holder will come and handy when the teacher is searching quickly to write down a note as a reminder to herself in her busy schedule.
We also thought adding a set of these adorable magnets was also very fitting. There are many sets to choose from and you can check out another set HERE. With these magnets, she can surround herself with photos of the class and the great memories captured. One of the highlights of being a SS teacher to my sister when teaching is seeing a child’s face whenever they finally start to understand and enjoy the lesson being taught. Taking photos of the class, a note from a student or papers of a ‘job well done’ can be displayed with these magnets as a reminder to the teacher of the treasured moments to hold onto. These inspiring magnets stick very well and will make a teacher smile when she sees them holding reminders on photo or paper of a special memory from her year of teaching.
This teacher’s kit will surely make a teachers day. I believe all teachers need encouragement and be appreciated on this special week. No matter what is going on outside of the classroom in the craziness of American life, the Sunday School class is made a place of peace, learning and safety by showing God’s love to all who enter. Often over-tasked, un-paid and under-appreciated for their efforts, we say THANK YOU to all those who answer the call to train the children in the way they should go! If you would like to honor a teacher who made a difference in your life or one who is making a difference in your child’s life, we encourage you to check out Dayspring and be a blessing in their lives!
“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”
